Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Technician to join our civil engineering team. The ideal candidate will have experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and be skilled in supporting civil engineering projects by managing and processing geospatial data. The GIS Technician will play a crucial role in data collection, data entry, mapping, and spatial analysis to assist engineers and project managers in designing and planning infrastructure systems, including transportation, utilities, and land development projects.

Responsibilities:

Geospatial Data Collection & Entry: Assist with gathering, compiling, and inputting geospatial data related to civil engineering projects, including topographic surveys, land parcels, utilities, transportation networks, and environmental features.

Mapping & Visualization: Produce high-quality maps, charts, and other visualizations to support engineering designs, project planning, and reporting. Ensure maps are clear, accurate, and meet project specifications.

Data Maintenance & Quality Control: Maintain geospatial databases, update GIS layers, and ensure data accuracy and consistency. Perform routine quality control checks to verify the integrity of spatial data.

Field Data Support: Assist in the collection of field data (e.g., via GPS or other surveying tools) and integrate field data into GIS systems. Support engineers in updating maps and designs based on field observations.

GIS Software Utilization: Use GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or AutoCAD Civil 3D to process, analyze, and manipulate geospatial data to meet project needs. Support the engineering team by providing data for analyses and project reports.

Spatial Analysis: Perform basic spatial analysis tasks such as buffer analysis, overlay analysis, proximity analysis, and network analysis to support civil engineering projects.

Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, surveyors, and other technical staff to ensure GIS data is correctly integrated into project workflows and that mapping needs are met.

Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of GIS-related activities, including data updates, map creation, and analysis results. Provide clear documentation and reports to assist project teams in decision-making.

Project Support: Assist in preparing GIS-related deliverables for various civil engineering projects, including transportation, water resources, utilities, land development, and environmental studies.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 1-3 years of experience working with GIS in civil engineering, land development, or a related industry.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D).
  • Experience with GPS data collection and geospatial database management.
  • Knowledge of geospatial data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GeoTIFF, KML, and geodatabases).
  • Basic understanding of spatial analysis techniques and cartography principles.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail, ensuring high-quality, accurate data entry and map production.
  • Communication Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with engineers and other stakeholders.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Field Work: Comfortable working in the field and assisting with data collection using GPS devices or other tools.
  • Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar engineering software.
  • Familiarity with basic surveying principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering concepts, including infrastructure systems like roads, utilities, and drainage.
  • GIS certifications (e.g., Esri Technical Certification, GISP) are a plus.
