Exciting Opportunity: Music Teacher

Uncommon Schools is seeking a passionate and accomplished Music Teacher to join our dynamic faculty. This is your chance to be part of a growing program dedicated to nurturing musical talent throughout the K-12 education of our scholars. Our music pedagogy is rooted in the Orff and Kodaly approaches, ensuring that every class is filled with singing, movement, instrument playing, and music literacy.

Your Responsibilities

  • Implement network-provided curricula and activities to meet music-specific academic standards.
  • Teach a variety of music-based content, including singing, dance, and elementary instrumental music.
  • Develop engaging music literacy lessons focused on rhythm, pitch notation, solfege, improvisation, and composition.
  • Collaborate with Enrichment teachers and the Director of Operations to plan multiple performances throughout the school year.
  • Design and implement assessments to measure student progress towards academic standards.
  • Support school instructional and cultural needs, including academic teaching coverage and daily systems duties.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development and school-wide functions.
  • Develop strong classroom management skills aligned with Uncommon Schools' system of management.
  • Be accountable for students’ mastery of musical standards.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Engage in an annual three-week staff orientation and training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education, or Performance.
  • Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary-aged children.
  • Familiarity with the Kodaly and Orff approaches; training in one or both is highly preferred.
  • Ability to manage and direct large groups of students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid State Certification is helpful but not required.
  • Piano and vocal proficiency, knowledge of recorder, and basic guitar skills are beneficial.
  • Alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is essential.
  • Experience performing and/or teaching music is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting is preferred.
  • A drive to improve the minds and lives of students both in and out of the classroom.
  • A proven track record of high achievement in the classroom.
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and a willingness to be a team player.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $50,000 to $64,700 . Starting pay is determined by various factors, including relevant full-time teaching experience, educational certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $50,000.
